    What is Mango Wood?

    What is mango wood?

    Mango Wood tree

Mango wood! Is that wood from a mango tree? That’s right! It’s used a lot for furniture these days. But why? What are the characteristics of mango wood? Where does it come from? How sustainable is mango wood? Furnwise explains. Read on quickly!

The Mango wood, which is very popular in the United Kingdom, is a species that is strong and durable. It comes from the mango fruit tree. This tree grows mainly in Southeast Asia and Australia. In India the mango fruit stands for prosperity, luxury and riches. Most of the mango wood furniture shipped to the UK comes from India.

Mango wood has a warm colour in the base, but due to the colour shades in the wood, there may be deviations. This is part of the type of wood, and is therefore not a deviation from the product that you may want to order. It is also possible that there is a yellow glow over the leaf. This is also part of the product. It gives furniture a robust and elegant appearance. In addition, each piece of furniture is unique!

    Tree Growth and Felling

Mango trees grow well in a tropical and subtropical climate with humid, hot summers and cool, dry, frost-free winters. A mango tree grows pretty fast. In this short period the tree can grow up to 40 meters high. The trunk can grow to 3 to 5 meters in circumference. Fruit production is good in this first period. As the tree ages, fruit production also declines. That’s why this tree on the mango plantations is worth less economically. The solution for mango farmers is then: cut down and replant. This way of working means that the wood of the mango tree can be called sustainable. It’s not just any forest that’s being cut down. After his life as a food producer, the wood is given a second life as a piece of furniture.

    Maintenance

How do you maintain mango wood? We are often asked this question. In principle, all furniture that Furnwise sells from mango wood is treated against moisture and stains. These products require little maintenance. You want to treat the furniture, don’t you? Then we have special Wood Care Kits for that. Other well-known and frequently used options are: beeswax, or transparent (or if desired other) lacquer. Beeswax is a natural product without chemicals. Please note that your mango wood product may become slightly darker. With beeswax, the veins become a little more visible, and the wood becomes a little more skinny. A wooden piece of furniture will “live” with beeswax. A transparent matt clear coat is another option. This will varnish a hard layer on the furniture, so that the furniture will not “live”.
